City Farm Kindergarten Program

Our Story

In 2022, our team developed City Farm Kinder as part of an ongoing project to provide more nature play in our curriculum. We found that this project brought us closer to our community, who were involved in many aspects of the set up and design of the children's farm. Our community has also be able to enjoy the produce the farm has given us over the years, including giant pumpkins, tomatoes, corn, sunflower seeds, figs and much more.
We aim to allow children the freedom of learning in and from this magical space.

The Seed to Feed Cycle

Our children learn about the whole process of how food gets to the table. We call this the Seed to Feed Cycle.

Animal Care

City Farm is home to many different animals, great and small. We regularly have chickens, pigeons, goats and sheep to care for and get to know. We also look out for pollinators like butterflies and bees. We appreciate all the critters that come our way for the different things they bring to our little farm.

Friedrich Fröbel's Garden

One of the theorist who inspire our work at City Farm is the German educator Friedrich Fröbel (1782-1852).
Frobel started the first kindergarten (German term for "Children's Garden") in 1837. Among his many innovative and world changing theories was the idea that children did not need direct instruction in morals, instead by learning to care for plants and animals they would naturally acquire those traits. Our little City Farm is inspired by many of Frobel's theories, everything from his garden designs, to his respect for play.

City Farm Kinder facilitator

Have you seen the big, tall man with the beard? He carries a shovel and has a pocket full of seeds. He may look like Santa Claus, but he’s much more of a Garden Gnome. “Sixty years ago, I was introduced to gardening by my mum, dad and next-door neighbour, Mrs Luise. I have been hooked ever since. Gardening: growing things from seeds; making compost and finding worms; weeding and pruning and watching pollinating birds and insects.  It is one of the most creative things that children can discover and enjoy. It is about LIFE itself. I want to share and teach what I learned 60 years ago.”

Cooking fresh from the Garden

Edu-Play Chef, Lauren, uses all the produce from City farm in her regular meals and City Farm Specials. Lauren is passionate about teaching children how to cook fresh healthy meals. Together we learn all about the food cycle. From planting seeds to harvesting, saving seeds and cooking, serving and eating, composting and worm farming. Then we start the whole process again.

So, enrol your child today into our City Farm Kindergarten Program where they will learn responsiblity, compassion, care, patients, respect and emotional resilience..
